Working and finishing Spalted Maple
Spalting is a decay process that has begun to soften the wood, so spalted boards can have punky or crumbly patches; test firmness before committing to a project, use cyanoacrylate glue or a stabilizing resin on soft spots for turning blanks, and expect faster tool dulling near mineral-stained zone lines.
A sanding sealer or thinned shellac washcoat locks down punky fibres before final finishing; oil finishes make the black zone lines pop. Because spalting is active decay, only fully dried, kiln-stabilized material should go anywhere near food contact.
