Working and finishing Black Palm
Density and hardness vary dramatically within a single piece since palm "wood" is a gradient of fibrous bundles in a softer cellular matrix, denser toward the outer trunk wall and softer toward the core, so tool response changes constantly across a cut; carbide-tipped tools are recommended.
An oil or film finish is needed to stabilize the softer core fibres; commonly turned into bowls, pens and decorative items where the natural speckled figure is the main appeal.
