Working and finishing Big Leaf Maple
A West Coast species distinct from Hard Maple; works well with sharp tools but figured quilted or curly stock tears out easily on the show face and benefits from a high cutting angle or scraping.
Oil finishes bring out quilt and curl figure dramatically; film finishes protect better for tabletops. Even, diffuse-porous grain resists blotching.
