Working and finishing Sapele
Interlocked grain is the defining characteristic. It tears out readily on the jointer/planer against the grain, so light cuts, a sharp cutter, or a scraper on figured faces are needed; glues and machines otherwise well.
The interlocked ribbon figure shows clearly under a film or oil finish; a sanding sealer or wash coat helps even out absorption before staining. A common substitute for genuine mahogany in furniture and boat trim.
