Working and finishing Purpleheart
Very hard and dense; it dulls cutters quickly, can gum up on the table saw from its natural resins, and interlocked grain can tear out on the planer, so slow feed rates and sharp carbide help.
A UV-inhibiting clear finish is essential to slow the fade from purple to brown; sanding dust is a known irritant, so use dust collection and a respirator. Turned pieces and inlays are common uses; not typically used for cutting boards.
