Working and finishing Red Oak
Open, porous grain means glue squeeze-out and finish soak in deeper than on maple or cherry; machines and nails well but is more porous and less rot-resistant than White Oak, so keep it away from exterior or wet-contact use.
Stains evenly compared to maple thanks to its open, ring-porous grain, though a grain filler is worth it for a glass-smooth film finish; open end grain will wick liquids, so it is a poor choice for cutting boards without a heavy sealed finish.
