Sweetgum colour, grain, and figure
The wide sapwood is whitish, light pink or tan and is sometimes sold as “sapgum” or “sweetgum.” The heartwood is grey to reddish brown and commonly sold as “redgum,” and darker black-streaked pieces go by “figured redgum.” Quartersawn pieces show a ribbon-stripe look.
The grain is interlocked and the texture is very fine and even. It has a good natural luster and has sometimes been nicknamed “satin walnut”.
Working notes
It is usually easy to work, but its interlocked grain can tear out when planing. Sweetgum has a reputation for badly warping and distorting in the first stage of drying.
Serious reactions are unusual, but sweetgum is reported to irritate the skin.
