Deep red heartwood with darker streaks sits beside sapwood that is lighter, from pinkish brown to nearly white. Light and air darken the heartwood.
The texture is fine to medium, and the grain is usually straight or slightly irregular.

A high silica content severely dulls cutting tools. Apart from that, the wood works without much trouble and takes glue and finish well.
