Overview

Why choose Pyinma?

Pyinma is an imported specialty hardwood. Its natural range is Southeast Asia. Common uses include small specialty pieces, turned items, boatbuilding, furniture and, within its native range, general utility work.

DurabilityRated moderately durable to durable against decay, with intermediate insect resistance.

Pyinma colour, grain, and figure

The heartwood is usually golden through reddish brown, beside paler yellow or grey sapwood. Light exposure darkens the colours with age.

The grain is usually straight, but some pieces are wavy or interlocked. The coarseness is moderate and the texture uneven, with a good sheen.

Working notes

Usually easy to work with good results, but curly-grained pieces, as with any figured wood, are inevitably harder to machine and plane without tearout. It lacks the dulling effect on cutters seen in true satinwoods.

Apart from the usual hazards of breathing any wood dust, Pyinma has no other reported health reactions.

Pyinma should be sold by project fit: colour, workability, durability, and the format the customer actually needs.

Use caution

Avoid specifying it by name alone; confirm board size, moisture, colour, figure, and the project environment before buying.

Finish strategy

Test finishes on offcuts first, especially when colour, blotching, outdoor exposure, or grain filling matters.

Buying note

Choose boards, slabs, plywood, blanks, or posts based on the project rather than species name alone.
