Milling and Planing Services
Kingma Lumber mills lumber in its own shop at 4607 91 Ave NW, Edmonton. You can have boards surfaced four sides (S4S), flatten a live edge slab, have panels glued up, or have a piece sanded and finished. Add a service to your online order or ask at the counter, then pick up the finished work at the yard.
Services and listed prices
These are the services in our services collection, with prices listed at the time of writing. The listing shows the current price.
- S4S milling: both faces and both edges planed flat and square to a consistent thickness. $25 per board, with a lower member rate. Priced per board, not per board foot.
- Rush S4S milling: for boards you need back on a deadline, at a higher per-board rate shown on the listing.
- Live edge slab flattening: $220 minimum for slabs under 9 square feet; $23 per square foot for slabs over 9 square feet.
- Custom sanding: $28 per square foot, with a $200 minimum per order.
- Glue-ups: S4S boards glued and clamped into solid panels for tabletops and shelving. $245 under 15 square feet, $345 for 15 to 24 square feet and $465 for 24 square feet and up.
- Finishing: sanding, epoxy filling of small voids and a spray polyurethane top coat. Ask how your piece will be measured for pricing.
- Shop rate: $140 per hour for thickness planing, jointing, edge squaring, dimension milling and other custom work. Members save 15%.
How to book
- Online: buy your lumber, add the S4S service and set the quantity to the number of boards you want milled.
- At the counter: choose your boards in the yard and tell us what you need.
- Slabs, glue-ups and custom work: call (780) 229-7681 with the size and what you want done, and we will quote it.
- Pickup: we let you know when the order is ready to collect at the yard.
Member orders are milled first. For non-members, turnaround depends on the queue, so call for the current wait if you are working to a date.
What to bring
- A cut list with finished thickness, width and length for each part, plus a little extra length for trimming.
- Your target thickness. Surfacing removes wood from both faces. A rough 4/4 board usually finishes near 3/4 inch.
- For slabs: the length and widest width so we can work out square footage, and the tag number if you bought the slab from us.
- Clean wood. Pull any nails, screws or staples and brush off dirt and grit, which damage planer knives.
- Wood from another source? Call before you bring it in.

Membership
A Kingma Membership is $14.99 per month. It takes 15% off products in the store, lowers the S4S milling rate, gives priority in the queue, and includes member-only sales.
Common questions
How much does it cost to plane lumber in Edmonton?
At Kingma Lumber, S4S milling (both faces and both edges) is $25 per board, with a lower rate for Kingma members. Other planing, jointing and custom milling is billed at the $140 per hour shop rate.
Do you flatten live edge slabs?
Yes. Slab flattening is $220 minimum for slabs under 9 square feet and $23 per square foot for slabs over 9 square feet. Call (780) 229-7681 with the slab size for a quote.
How long does milling take?
Member S4S orders are milled first and are ready within 3 business days. Non-member orders follow member orders, so timing depends on how busy the shop is. A rush S4S option is available if you have a deadline.
Can I bring in lumber I bought somewhere else?
Our S4S service is set up for lumber bought from Kingma Lumber. For wood or slabs from another source, call first and ask whether we can take the job.
How much thickness will I lose?
It depends on how far the board is out of flat. Surfacing takes wood off both faces, so if your finished thickness is tight, ask us before you buy.
Do I need a membership to use your milling services?
No. Everyone can book milling. Kingma members pay a lower per-board S4S rate, get priority in the queue and save 15% on the shop rate.
