Cedar grades, simply
- Utility Plus: the most economical grade, with more knots and character. A good fit for fences, planters and structure where appearance matters less.
- STK (standard tight knot), listed as Premium II: knots are tight and sound. The usual choice for decks, fences and screens that are on show.
- Clear, listed as Premium III or sauna grade: few or no knots. Used for saunas, ceilings and trim.
- Tongue and groove also comes in a lowest-cost swamp cedar grade and a premium clear grade with pencil knots.
Grades are easier to judge in person; ask at the counter.
Cedar in an Edmonton climate
Cedar handles Alberta weather well because it is naturally resistant to rot and insects and moves less than many softwoods through freeze and thaw. A few habits help it last:
- Let it acclimate. Stack new boards flat with spacers in the shade for a few days before you install them.
- Seal cut ends and, where you can, finish all four sides before installation so moisture enters evenly.
- Keep end grain out of standing water and snow. Slope post tops, leave drainage gaps between deck boards and keep boards off the soil.
- Set posts below the frost line, which is deep in the Edmonton area. Check the local requirement before you dig.
- Plan for upkeep. Our dry, sunny winters and hot summers dry cedar out. Re-oil exposed surfaces every one to two years, or let the wood weather to silver grey.
