Catalpa colour, grain, and figure
Heartwood runs from a neutral greyish tan up to a deeper golden brown, and nearly the whole trunk is heartwood. The narrow sapwood is pale grey.

Working notes
It is generally easy to work by hand or machine, though take care when sanding, because the lighter latewood wears away faster than the earlywood and can leave dips and ridges. A rigid sanding block is recommended. Turning and gluing are fine and it finishes well, but the pores need filling for a smooth finished surface.
